Why teams connect Paylocity and Quip

Keep the people, teams, and status that Quip and Paylocity share aligned in real time, so a hire, role change, or departure recorded in one reaches the other within seconds.

Each tool in Quip keeps its own list of who can use it: users, members, or agents, along with the team they sit on and whether they are still active. Paylocity is the authoritative record of the same people as employees, with their department, manager, and employment status. When those two are connected only by manual account admin or a periodic export, the work tools drift: new hires wait days for access, team and manager changes never catch up, and people who have left keep standing accounts.

Stacksync syncs Blobs, Documents, Spreadsheets, Folders in Quip with Custom Fields, Employees, Onboarding, Deductions (Pay Setup) in Paylocity bi-directionally and in real time. A person added, moved, or offboarded in Paylocity creates or updates the matching user in Quip within seconds, with field-level mapping and conflict resolution in place of spreadsheets and one-off account changes. Where Quip captures details of its own, such as a corrected contact or a login identity, those can flow back to Paylocity in whichever direction you configure.

Because the sync is field-level, each system keeps its own extras; only the shared facts, who a person is, which team they belong to, and whether their access should be on, are held in agreement.

Common sync patterns

Onboarding: access ready on day one

A new hire recorded in Paylocity creates the matching user in Quip with the right team and manager already set, so people can start working without waiting on a provisioning ticket.

Offboarding: no standing access after a departure

When someone is marked as leaving in Paylocity, the matching account in Quip is deactivated or flagged, so departures do not leave open access behind.

One employee directory

A person's name, title, contact details, or status corrected in either system updates the other, so both sides stop maintaining separate copies of the same person.

Custom Fields Read-only company-specific custom fields returned by category, used to enrich the employee record downstream. How changes propagate between Paylocity and Quip

Paylocity Quip Sub-second propagation

DetectionPaylocity notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. Webhooks — Paylocity POSTs Employee New Hire, Employee Change, Termination, Payroll Processed, and Time Off Approval events to a callback URL.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Quip through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Quip Paylocity Interval-based propagation

DetectionStacksync polls Quip for changes on an incremental schedule, reading only records changed since the previous pass. Polling on thread updated_usec timestamps — get_recent_threads paginates by max_updated_usec.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Paylocity through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Rate-limit considerations

  • Paylocity: 25 requests per second (1,500 per minute); exceeding it returns HTTP 429. Every path is scoped to a Paylocity-assigned companyId (a company code, not a UUID).
  • Quip: Automation API allows roughly 50 requests per minute per access token; exceeding it returns HTTP 503, and responses carry X-RateLimit headers.
