Why teams connect Braintree and Hibob

Keep the employee, department, and cost records that Braintree and Hibob share consistent in real time, so the finance system and the people system stop drifting apart.

Braintree runs the money side of the company: who gets paid, what it costs, and which part of the business the cost belongs to. Hibob runs the people side: who works here, which team they sit in, and how their employment changes over time. The two overlap on the same people and the same org structure, because every employee is also a payee and every department is also a cost center. When that overlap is maintained by hand, a new hire, a transfer, or a termination has to be keyed twice, and the two systems start to disagree about who is active and where the cost lands.

Stacksync syncs Payment Methods, Subscriptions, Plans, Disputes in Braintree with Documents, Named lists, People (Employees), Employment in Hibob bi-directionally and in real time. A person added, updated, or deactivated on either side appears on the other within seconds, with field-level mapping and conflict resolution in place of CSV exports and nightly batch jobs.

That matters most when money follows a people event. A hire that finance can pay, a leaver whose access ends, a transfer that redirects cost to the right team, all happen from one change instead of two, so headcount and spend reconcile from the same set of records.

Common use cases

  • 01 Stream settled Transactions, refunds, and disbursements into a data warehouse for revenue recognition and daily reconciliation against the ERP ledger.
  • 02 Create and update Customers and Subscriptions from a CRM or billing app when a deal closes or a plan changes, writing back to Braintree.
  • 03 Two-way sync People (employee) profiles and Work records with a Postgres database so internal apps and directories read profiles in SQL while HR corrections flow back into Bob.
  • 04 Auto-provision or deprovision accounts in an IdP, ticketing tool, or app database when Bob Lifecycle events fire employee joined or terminated.

Common sync patterns

New person becomes a known record in finance

When someone is added in Hibob, a matching employee or payee record appears in Braintree, ready for payroll, expenses, or cost allocation without anyone rekeying the details.

One employee identity

A person's name, ID, or contact details corrected in either system update the other, so finance and HR reference the same person instead of maintaining two versions.

Department and cost-center alignment

The org structure maintained in Hibob keeps the departments or cost centers in Braintree current, so spend and headcount roll up the same way.

What you can sync between Braintree and Hibob

Representative objects on each side — any object or custom field can map to any target. Schemas are auto-detected; types are converted between the two systems.

Braintree objects Hibob objects How this pairing syncs
Disputes Chargebacks with evidence and deadlines; ops teams can respond and add evidence via the API, and dispute webhooks push status changes to downstream tools. Documents Employee documents accessed under the Docs API; gated behind the Documents permission granted per service user. Disputes is specific to Braintree and Documents to Hibob — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Add-ons and Discounts Modifiers applied to Subscriptions; defined in the Control Panel and read alongside subscription state when mirroring billing data. Named lists Dropdown option lists such as departments and sites used to resolve field values when mapping People records during sync. Add-ons and Discounts is specific to Braintree and Named lists to Hibob — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Merchant Accounts and Disbursements The accounts funds settle into plus settlement batches paid out; disbursement webhooks and settlement batch reports drive reconciliation feeds. People (Employees) Core employee records with out-of-the-box and custom fields; read via POST /people/search, created and updated through the /people endpoints. Merchant Accounts and Disbursements is specific to Braintree and People (Employees) to Hibob — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Customers Vaulted customer profiles that hold payment methods; created and updated two-way via the API and searchable by created/updated date range. Employment Historical table of job terms, contract, and working pattern under /people/{id}/employment; full CRUD, entries keyed by effectiveDate. Customers is specific to Braintree and Employment to Hibob — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Transactions Sales, refunds, and credits; created through the API but immutable after that (only void/refund/settle transitions), so syncs treat them as append-only with status changes. Work Reporting line, department, site, and title under /people/{id}/work; drives the org chart and is synced two-way to directories. Transactions is specific to Braintree and Work to Hibob — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Payment Methods Tokenized credit cards, PayPal accounts, and other instruments stored in the Vault against a Customer; only tokens, last-four, and expiry are exposed, never raw PAN. Salaries Compensation history at /people/{id}/salaries; full CRUD but gated behind the Payroll permission on the service user. Payment Methods is specific to Braintree and Salaries to Hibob — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.

How changes propagate between Braintree and Hibob

Each direction of the sync is driven by what the source system can signal and what the destination accepts — detection, delivery, and expected latency below.

Braintree Hibob Sub-second propagation

DetectionBraintree notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. Webhooks (subscription, transaction, dispute, disbursement, payment method, account updater) for near-real-time events, plus created/updated.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Hibob through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Hibob Braintree Sub-second propagation

DetectionHibob notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. Webhooks fire for employee created/updated/deleted, table-entry created/updated, time off, and lifecycle events.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Braintree through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Rate-limit considerations

  • Braintree: No published hard rate limits; Braintree may throttle traffic it deems abusive and returns HTTP 429, and its docs recommend webhooks over polling with a 60-second request timeout.
  • Hibob: Rate limits are enforced per service user; violations return HTTP 429 with X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, and X-RateLimit-Reset response headers. The docs list POST /people/search at 50 requests per minute, and bulk /people/search is preferred over per-record reads.

How the Braintree and Hibob connectors work

Braintree

Integration surface
Braintree GraphQL API (single POST endpoint) plus legacy server SDKs
Authentication
API Key authentication — public key + private key Base64-encoded in the Authorization header (HTTP Basic); client tokens/tokenization keys for client-side calls and OAuth for platform/marketplace access
Change detection
Webhooks (subscription, transaction, dispute, disbursement, payment method, account updater) for near-real-time events, plus created/updated date-range search for objects and backfills
Capabilities
read · write · webhooks
Rate limits
No published hard rate limits; Braintree may throttle traffic it deems abusive and returns HTTP 429, and its docs recommend webhooks over polling with a 60-second request timeout.

Hibob

Integration surface
REST API (the Bob API)
Authentication
Service User credentials over HTTP Basic auth (Base64-encoded serviceUserId:serviceUserToken); permissions granted per data category (People, Payroll, Documents) in Bob admin
Change detection
Webhooks fire for employee created/updated/deleted, table-entry created/updated, time off, and lifecycle events; the employee.updated payload flags which fields changed and Bob recommends an API call for the full record. There is no CDC stream, and deleting a table entry fires no webhook (Bob has no table-entry deletion event).
Capabilities
read · write · webhooks
Rate limits
Rate limits are enforced per service user; violations return HTTP 429 with X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, and X-RateLimit-Reset response headers. The docs list POST /people/search at 50 requests per minute, and bulk /people/search is preferred over per-record reads.
