Why teams connect Amazon RDS and Salesforce Marketing Cloud

Give your team Salesforce Marketing Cloud's contacts, campaigns, and engagement in Amazon RDS: query them with SQL, push audiences built from your own data back to Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and skip the marketing API.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud holds the people, audiences, and campaign activity that marketing runs on, but that data sits behind interfaces built for marketers, not for your internal systems. Engineers and analysts who need contacts, list membership, or engagement, for reporting, attribution, or product logic, end up writing integration code against a rate-limited API and maintaining it forever. Meanwhile the customer and usage data marketers want for targeting already lives in Amazon RDS, hard to get into campaigns without manual exports.

Stacksync mirrors Data Extensions, Contacts / Subscribers, Journeys (Journey Builder), Content Assets (Content Builder) from Salesforce Marketing Cloud into Databases, Schemas, Tables, Views in Amazon RDS field by field, in real time, and in both directions. Marketing records become rows your code can query and join with product and customer data; audiences and attributes computed in Amazon RDS, from usage, orders, or account status, sync back into Salesforce Marketing Cloud to drive campaigns and ads, with Salesforce Marketing Cloud kept authoritative for engagement. You decide which side owns which fields, and Stacksync resolves conflicts by rules you set.

Common use cases

  • 01 Bi-directional sync between an RDS database and a CRM so application data and sales data stay consistent without custom integration code
  • 02 Mirror SaaS objects into RDS tables so product features can join business data with application data in one query
  • 03 Sync Contacts and Subscriber Key subscription status between Marketing Cloud and a CRM so suppression and opt-in state stay current before the next send.
  • 04 Stream Event Notification Service callbacks for transactional sends, bounces, opens, and clicks into a database in near real time alongside CRM contact records.

Common sync patterns

Engagement and results next to the customer

Opens, clicks, sends, RSVPs, or ad activity from Salesforce Marketing Cloud land in Amazon RDS beside the matching customer record, ready for reporting and revenue attribution.

React to marketing changes as row changes

A new lead, form fill, or list change in Salesforce Marketing Cloud arrives as a row change in Amazon RDS, so scoring, jobs, and notifications run in the tooling your team already uses.

Keep contact attributes consistent

Lifecycle stage, subscription status, or plan maintained on either side stays current on the other, ending exports and dual data entry.

What you can sync between Amazon RDS and Salesforce Marketing Cloud

Representative objects on each side — any object or custom field can map to any target. Schemas are auto-detected; types are converted between the two systems.

Amazon RDS objects Salesforce Marketing Cloud objects How this pairing syncs
Columns Field-level mapping targets, typed per the underlying engine. Transactional Sends Triggered and transactional Email/SMS delivered through the Messaging API (/messaging/v1/email/messages/{key}); the Event Notification Service reports each message's disposition (delivered, bounced, opened, clicked). Columns is specific to Amazon RDS and Transactional Sends to Salesforce Marketing Cloud — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Primary and Unique Keys Match keys for idempotent upserts. Data Extensions Custom relational tables that store subscriber, audience, and arbitrary business data; rows are read via GET /data/v1/customobjectdata or SOAP Retrieve and upserted via the synchronous rowset PUT or the async /data/v1/async/dataextensions rows endpoint. This is the primary two-way surface. Primary and Unique Keys is specific to Amazon RDS and Data Extensions to Salesforce Marketing Cloud — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Read Replicas Low-impact read endpoints often used as the source side of a sync. Contacts / Subscribers The contact model keyed by Subscriber Key, holding channel addresses and subscription status; managed through the Contacts API (/contacts/v1/contacts) and the SOAP Subscriber object, and referenced by every send and journey. Read Replicas is specific to Amazon RDS and Contacts / Subscribers to Salesforce Marketing Cloud — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Stored Procedures Engine-specific logic that can react to synced rows. Journeys (Journey Builder) Multi-step automated flows read and managed via /interaction/v1/interactions; contacts are injected by firing an entry event to /interaction/v1/events with an EventDefinitionKey and contact data. Stored Procedures is specific to Amazon RDS and Journeys (Journey Builder) to Salesforce Marketing Cloud — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Databases Engine-level databases on the instance that scope a sync's reads and writes. Content Assets (Content Builder) Emails, templates, images, and reusable content blocks stored in Content Builder and read or written via /asset/v1/content/assets, used to compose the messages a journey or send delivers. Databases is specific to Amazon RDS and Content Assets (Content Builder) to Salesforce Marketing Cloud — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Schemas Namespaces within a database used to isolate synced tables. Automations (Automation Studio) Scheduled or triggered workflows of import, query, extract, and send activities managed via /automation/v1/automations; SQL Query Activities read Data Views and write results into Data Extensions. Schemas is specific to Amazon RDS and Automations (Automation Studio) to Salesforce Marketing Cloud — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.

How changes propagate between Amazon RDS and Salesforce Marketing Cloud

Each direction of the sync is driven by what the source system can signal and what the destination accepts — detection, delivery, and expected latency below.

Amazon RDS Salesforce Marketing Cloud Sub-second propagation

DetectionChanges in Amazon RDS are captured at the source via change data capture — no polling loop against its API. Engine-native log-based CDC: MySQL/MariaDB binlog, PostgreSQL logical replication, SQL Server CDC.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Salesforce Marketing Cloud through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Amazon RDS Sub-second propagation

DetectionSalesforce Marketing Cloud notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. The Event Notification Service (ENS) issues HTTPS POST callbacks for transactional Email and SMS events (sent, bounce, open, click) once a callback.

DeliveryEach detected change is applied to Amazon RDS as a row-level write, with types converted between the two schemas.

Rate-limit considerations

  • Amazon RDS: No API rate limits; throughput depends on instance class, storage IOPS, and connection limits.
  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud: Salesforce does not publish fixed numeric REST rate limits; requests are throttled per account and can return HTTP 429, so backoff is advised. SOAP Retrieve returns at most 2,500 records per call and pages via ContinueRequest with the prior RequestID. Bulk Data Extension writes use the async rows API to queue inserts in the background.

How the Amazon RDS and Salesforce Marketing Cloud connectors work

Amazon RDS

Integration surface
SQL wire protocol of the chosen engine (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle)
Authentication
Database credentials over SSL/TLS, or IAM database authentication on supported engines
Change detection
Engine-native log-based CDC: MySQL/MariaDB binlog, PostgreSQL logical replication, SQL Server CDC; enabled through RDS parameter groups, with polling as a fallback
Capabilities
read · write · CDC
Rate limits
No API rate limits; throughput depends on instance class, storage IOPS, and connection limits

Salesforce Marketing Cloud

Integration surface
Two APIs on tenant-specific endpoints: a REST API (JSON over HTTPS) for Data Extensions, Journeys, Contacts, Content Builder, and Automations, plus a legacy SOAP API (ExactTarget WSDL) for tracking events and bulk Retrieve.
Authentication
OAuth 2.0 via an Installed Package (Client ID + Client Secret). Server-to-server uses the client_credentials grant and web apps use authorization_code, both against {subdomain}.auth.marketingcloudapis.com/v2/token. The 20-minute access token response also returns the account's rest_instance_url and soap_instance_url.
Change detection
The Event Notification Service (ENS) issues HTTPS POST callbacks for transactional Email and SMS events (sent, bounce, open, click) once a callback URL and subscription are registered and verified. There is no general data-change feed, so Data Extension and Data View syncs poll by date fields.
Capabilities
read · write · webhooks
Rate limits
Salesforce does not publish fixed numeric REST rate limits; requests are throttled per account and can return HTTP 429, so backoff is advised. SOAP Retrieve returns at most 2,500 records per call and pages via ContinueRequest with the prior RequestID. Bulk Data Extension writes use the async rows API to queue inserts in the background.
