Why teams connect Auth0 and Customer.io

Keep the users, groups, and profile details that Customer.io and Auth0 share consistent in real time, so who can work in Customer.io always matches who your directory in Auth0 says belongs there.

Auth0 is where a company records who its people are: their accounts, the groups and roles they hold, and the attributes attached to each one. Customer.io is where a slice of those same people do their work, as agents, members, or seats, and every one of them needs a matching account with the right access. When a directory and a productivity tool are maintained by hand, someone added, moved, or offboarded in one becomes a stale entry in the other within the hour.

Stacksync syncs Segments, Campaigns, Broadcasts, Deliveries / Messages in Customer.io with Roles, Organizations, Organization Members, Connections in Auth0 bi-directionally and in real time. A user created, renamed, moved between groups, or deactivated in either system updates the matching record in the other within seconds, with field-level mapping and conflict resolution in place of CSV uploads and nightly IT batch jobs.

That matters most at the edges of employment. When both systems agree on who has an account, which groups they belong to, and whether they are still active, granting access on day one and revoking it on the last day stops being a manual checklist that trails the directory.

Common use cases

  • 01 Land delivery and engagement events (sent, opened, clicked, bounced) from reporting webhooks into a warehouse for attribution analysis.
  • 02 Keep unsubscribe and subscription-preference state consistent between Customer.io and the CRM to avoid compliance gaps.
  • 03 Stream Log Events for logins, signups, and failed authentications into a warehouse for security monitoring and authentication funnel reporting.
  • 04 Sync Organizations and their Connections into a customer database so B2B account records stay aligned with Auth0 tenants.

Common sync patterns

One record per person

People matched across both systems on email or an external ID stay linked, so every account and action in Customer.io ties back to the right identity in Auth0.

Provision access when someone joins

A user added to Auth0, or moved into a group inside it, gets the matching account or membership created in Customer.io, so a new hire can start working without a separate setup ticket.

Close access when someone leaves

When a user is disabled or removed in Auth0, their account in Customer.io is deactivated in step, so offboarding shuts down access everywhere instead of leaving a live login behind.

What you can sync between Auth0 and Customer.io

Representative objects on each side — any object or custom field can map to any target. Schemas are auto-detected; types are converted between the two systems.

Auth0 objects Customer.io objects How this pairing syncs
Users Core identity records with profile fields plus user_metadata and app_metadata; synced two-way (create, update, delete) via /api/v2/users. Credentials are never returned. People Profiles with attributes, matched on identifiers like id or email; the main write target of data syncs. Users is specific to Auth0 and People to Customer.io — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Roles RBAC role definitions and their permissions; synced with a database to audit which users hold which access, and assigned to Users from either side. Objects Non-person entities such as accounts or companies, related to people for account-level messaging. Roles is specific to Auth0 and Objects to Customer.io — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Organizations B2B customer tenants under /api/v2/organizations; synced two-way with a CRM or customer database to keep account records aligned with Auth0 orgs. Events Behavioral events sent via the Track API that trigger campaigns. Organizations is specific to Auth0 and Events to Customer.io — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Organization Members Membership records linking Users to Organizations with roles; written to provision and deprovision access as accounts change. Segments Attribute- or event-based groups; data syncs feed the attributes segments evaluate. Organization Members is specific to Auth0 and Segments to Customer.io — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Connections Identity-provider configs (database, social, enterprise SAML/OIDC); typically read out to inventory how each tenant authenticates. Campaigns Automated workflows whose membership and metrics can be read via the App API. Connections is specific to Auth0 and Campaigns to Customer.io — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Clients (Applications) Registered applications and their metadata under /api/v2/clients; mirrored to a database for app and credential inventories. Broadcasts One-off sends to segments or audiences, triggerable via API. Clients (Applications) is specific to Auth0 and Broadcasts to Customer.io — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.

How changes propagate between Auth0 and Customer.io

Each direction of the sync is driven by what the source system can signal and what the destination accepts — detection, delivery, and expected latency below.

Auth0 Customer.io Sub-second propagation

DetectionAuth0 notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. Event Streams and Log Streams deliver near-real-time user.created/updated/deleted and tenant events to a custom webhook or Amazon EventBridge.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Customer.io through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Customer.io Auth0 Sub-second propagation

DetectionCustomer.io notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. Reporting webhooks push message and delivery events.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Auth0 through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Rate-limit considerations

  • Auth0: Per-tenant limit of about 15 Management API requests/second (bursts to 50) on paid tenants; X-RateLimit-* headers and HTTP 429 signal throttling.
  • Customer.io: Subject to per-API rate limits documented by Customer.io.

How the Auth0 and Customer.io connectors work

Auth0

Integration surface
Management API v2 (REST); Authentication API issues the access token
Authentication
OAuth 2.0 client credentials from a machine-to-machine application; scoped Bearer JWT where each operation needs its own scope (e.g. read:users, create:users, update:users) or returns 403
Change detection
Event Streams and Log Streams deliver near-real-time user.created/updated/deleted and tenant events to a custom webhook or Amazon EventBridge; polling falls back to the Get Users search filtered on updated_at
Capabilities
read · write · webhooks
Rate limits
Per-tenant limit of about 15 Management API requests/second (bursts to 50) on paid tenants; X-RateLimit-* headers and HTTP 429 signal throttling

Customer.io

Integration surface
REST APIs split by purpose: Track API for data ingestion, App API for campaigns, people lookups, and messages
Authentication
Basic auth with site ID and API key for the Track API; bearer token for the App API
Change detection
Reporting webhooks push message and delivery events; person attribute changes are not streamed and require source-side detection
Capabilities
read · write · webhooks
Rate limits
Subject to per-API rate limits documented by Customer.io
