Why teams connect Citus and PagerDuty

Keep Citus and PagerDuty in step: the rows in your database and the Escalation Policies, On-Calls, Notes and Log Entries, Incidents your engineering tools track stay consistent in real time, in both directions.

Citus is where your application's durable data lives; PagerDuty is where engineering and operations teams track the issues, events, messages, or identities that run alongside it. The two overlap constantly, a row should open a ticket, an alert should land as a record, a user in one should exist in the other, but bridging them today means per-tool integration code: auth, webhooks, pagination, rate limits, and retries, built and maintained separately for every tool.

Stacksync syncs Sequences, Distributed tables, Reference tables, Local tables in Citus with Escalation Policies, On-Calls, Notes and Log Entries, Incidents in PagerDuty field by field, in real time, and in both directions. You decide which system owns which fields; Stacksync keeps every copy consistent and resolves conflicts by rules you set, so the database and the tooling around it never drift apart.

Common use cases

  • 01 Consolidate per-tenant rows from distributed tables into per-customer reporting databases.
  • 02 Sync high-volume event or tenant data from a Citus cluster into a warehouse for cross-tenant analytics.
  • 03 Mirror Services and their integration keys with a CMDB or service catalog so ownership and tier metadata stay aligned in both directions.
  • 04 Provision and deactivate Users and Team memberships two-way from an HRIS or identity provider so the on-call roster matches the current org.

Common sync patterns

Where PagerDuty manages users or groups: keep identity aligned

Directory and identity records in PagerDuty stay matched to the users or owners table in Citus, so provisioning and de-provisioning flow from one source.

Turn rows into the records your tools track

A new or changed row in Citus creates or updates the matching record in PagerDuty, whether that is an issue, an event, a message, or a user, so the tool reflects the database without a custom API job.

Land tool activity as queryable rows

Records and events from PagerDuty arrive in Citus as rows, so tickets, alerts, messages, or identity changes become joinable data your services and reports read directly.

What you can sync between Citus and PagerDuty

Representative objects on each side — any object or custom field can map to any target. Schemas are auto-detected; types are converted between the two systems.

Citus objects PagerDuty objects How this pairing syncs
Reference tables Small lookup tables replicated to every node, synced like ordinary Postgres tables. Notes and Log Entries Notes are writable to append context to an incident; log entries are a read-only record of every action taken on that incident. Reference tables is specific to Citus and Notes and Log Entries to PagerDuty — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Local tables Coordinator-only tables that behave exactly like standard PostgreSQL tables. Incidents Core records with status of triggered, acknowledged, or resolved plus urgency and assignments; created, updated, and resolved two-way, with V3 webhooks firing on each transition. Local tables is specific to Citus and Incidents to PagerDuty — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Schemas Standard Postgres namespaces used to scope what a sync user can read and write. Services Technical services that group incidents and hold integration keys; read and written two-way, with service.created, service.updated, and service.deleted webhook events. Schemas is specific to Citus and Services to PagerDuty — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Views Curated projections over distributed data, often used as read-only sync sources. Users Responders with contact methods and notification rules; provisioned and updated two-way to keep the on-call roster aligned with an HRIS or identity provider. Views is specific to Citus and Users to PagerDuty — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Sequences Key generators that matter when external writes must not collide with application inserts. Teams Groupings of users, services, and escalation policies; synced two-way so membership mirrors org structure from an IdP or HRIS. Sequences is specific to Citus and Teams to PagerDuty — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Distributed tables Tables sharded across worker nodes by a distribution column; the main sync target for large datasets. Schedules On-call rotations built from layers and overrides; read and written so calendar or workforce tools can drive who is on call. Distributed tables is specific to Citus and Schedules to PagerDuty — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.

How changes propagate between Citus and PagerDuty

Each direction of the sync is driven by what the source system can signal and what the destination accepts — detection, delivery, and expected latency below.

Citus PagerDuty Sub-second propagation

DetectionChanges in Citus are captured at the source via change data capture — no polling loop against its API. PostgreSQL logical decoding / CDC, with caveats: changes to distributed tables occur on worker shards, so CDC setup differs from single-node Postgres.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to PagerDuty through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

PagerDuty Citus Sub-second propagation

DetectionPagerDuty notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. V3 webhook subscriptions push incident.* and service.* events (triggered, acknowledged, escalated, resolved, created, updated).

DeliveryEach detected change is applied to Citus as a row-level write, with types converted between the two schemas.

Rate-limit considerations

  • PagerDuty: REST API allows 960 requests per minute per token and returns HTTP 429 when exceeded; the Events API is rate-limited separately per integration key.

How the Citus and PagerDuty connectors work

Citus

Integration surface
PostgreSQL wire protocol; any standard Postgres driver connects to the coordinator node
Authentication
Database credentials (standard PostgreSQL authentication; managed deployments add cloud IAM options)
Change detection
PostgreSQL logical decoding / CDC, with caveats: changes to distributed tables occur on worker shards, so CDC setup differs from single-node Postgres
Capabilities
read · write · CDC

PagerDuty

Integration surface
REST API v2 (plus Events API v2 for inbound alerts)
Authentication
REST API token via the Authorization: Token header (account-level for full access or user-level scoped to the user's permissions), or OAuth 2.0 (Authorization Code / PKCE); the Events API v2 uses a per-service routing (integration) key
Change detection
V3 webhook subscriptions push incident.* and service.* events (triggered, acknowledged, escalated, resolved, created, updated); list endpoints also support polling with updated_at and since/until windows
Capabilities
