Why teams connect BigQuery and Recurly

Land the financial records from Recurly in BigQuery continuously, and write results back, without building or maintaining a pipeline.

Finance data belongs in the warehouse: revenue, invoices, payments, and customers joined with everything else the business measures. Getting it there usually means an extraction pipeline that breaks quietly and delivers yesterday's numbers.

Stacksync syncs Coupons and Redemptions, Billing Info, Measured Units and Usage, Accounts from Recurly into tables in BigQuery in real time, and the connection works in both directions: values computed in BigQuery can be written back to fields in Recurly where you want them operational. Schema changes are handled, API limits are managed, and the sync is something you configure rather than code you maintain.

Common use cases

  • 01 Sync Accounts and Subscriptions bi-directionally with Postgres so product and provisioning systems read live entitlement state and write plan or seat changes back to Recurly.
  • 02 Trigger revenue-recognition or ERP entries when new_subscription and canceled_subscription webhooks fire.
  • 03 Land CRM and ERP records in BigQuery continuously so dashboards reflect business systems without nightly batch jobs
  • 04 Activate modeled BigQuery tables by syncing computed attributes back into sales and marketing tools

Common sync patterns

Finance analytics without ETL

Invoices, payments, and customer records from Recurly arrive in BigQuery as queryable tables, current within seconds instead of a day behind.

Revenue joined with everything else

Analysts combine Recurly's financial records with product, marketing, or operational data already in BigQuery for reporting the finance system cannot do alone.

Write-back of computed fields

Scores or segments computed in BigQuery, like payment-risk flags or customer tiers, sync back onto records in Recurly where the finance team can act on them.

What you can sync between BigQuery and Recurly

Representative objects on each side — any object or custom field can map to any target. Schemas are auto-detected; types are converted between the two systems.

BigQuery objects Recurly objects How this pairing syncs
Datasets Organizational container — you pick which dataset’s tables to sync. Coupons and Redemptions Discount definitions and their application to accounts and subscriptions; read for discount and promotion analysis. Datasets is specific to BigQuery and Coupons and Redemptions to Recurly — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Projects Connection scope: the service account grants access per project. Billing Info Tokenized payment method (card/ACH) on an account; written when onboarding customers and read for payment-health signals (never stores raw card numbers). Projects is specific to BigQuery and Billing Info to Recurly — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Tables The syncable unit: only tables can be synced per the Stacksync docs. Measured Units and Usage Metered-billing units; usage records are posted to a subscription before each bill run for consumption-based pricing. Tables is specific to BigQuery and Measured Units and Usage to Recurly — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Partitioned tables Synced like regular tables; partition columns map to target fields. Accounts Customer/billing entity records keyed by account_code; the anchor most subscriptions and invoices hang off. Synced two-way with CRM accounts or a customer database. Partitioned tables is specific to BigQuery and Accounts to Recurly — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Clustered tables Supported; clustering is transparent to the sync. Subscriptions Recurring subscription records tied to an Account and a Plan, with state, term, and next-bill date. Core object, synced two-way to drive provisioning and reporting. Clustered tables is specific to BigQuery and Subscriptions to Recurly — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.

How changes propagate between BigQuery and Recurly

Each direction of the sync is driven by what the source system can signal and what the destination accepts — detection, delivery, and expected latency below.

BigQuery Recurly Sub-second propagation

DetectionChanges in BigQuery are captured at the source via change data capture — no polling loop against its API. Real-time notification service deployed into your Google Cloud project: Eventarc ("a notification service that enables real-time updates to happen").

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Recurly through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Recurly BigQuery Sub-second propagation

DetectionRecurly notifies Stacksync of record changes through webhook events. Webhooks (JSON or XML, one format per endpoint) for account, subscription, payment, and invoice events, plus incremental polling of list endpoints.

DeliveryEach detected change is applied to BigQuery as a row-level write, with types converted between the two schemas.

Rate-limit considerations

  • BigQuery: Subject to Google Cloud quotas on queries, DML, and streaming; DML is supported but the platform favors append-heavy batch and streaming loads over row-at-a-time writes.
  • Recurly: Production sites default to 1,000 requests/min with only GET requests counting toward the limit; sandbox sites 400/min with all requests counting; the limit is a sliding 5-minute window, X-RateLimit headers report the quota, and breaches return HTTP 429.
