Why teams connect Amazon RDS and Ldap

Keep Amazon RDS and Ldap in step: the rows in your database and the Groups (groupOfNames / posixGroup), Organizational units (ou), Attributes, Operational attributes your engineering tools track stay consistent in real time, in both directions.

Amazon RDS is where your application's durable data lives; Ldap is where engineering and operations teams track the issues, events, messages, or identities that run alongside it. The two overlap constantly, a row should open a ticket, an alert should land as a record, a user in one should exist in the other, but bridging them today means per-tool integration code: auth, webhooks, pagination, rate limits, and retries, built and maintained separately for every tool.

Stacksync syncs Stored Procedures, Databases, Schemas, Tables in Amazon RDS with Groups (groupOfNames / posixGroup), Organizational units (ou), Attributes, Operational attributes in Ldap field by field, in real time, and in both directions. You decide which system owns which fields; Stacksync keeps every copy consistent and resolves conflicts by rules you set, so the database and the tooling around it never drift apart.

Common use cases

  • 01 Keep an RDS reporting database hydrated from operational tools without maintaining ETL jobs
  • 02 Sync master data (customers, products, pricing) from an ERP into the RDS databases that power customer-facing apps
  • 03 Connect a niche or legacy directory server that has no dedicated Stacksync connector but speaks LDAPv3, syncing it over a bind DN and TLS.
  • 04 Incrementally sync changed entries by polling modifyTimestamp, keeping a downstream store fresh without dumping the whole directory each cycle.

Common sync patterns

Turn rows into the records your tools track

A new or changed row in Amazon RDS creates or updates the matching record in Ldap, whether that is an issue, an event, a message, or a user, so the tool reflects the database without a custom API job.

Land tool activity as queryable rows

Records and events from Ldap arrive in Amazon RDS as rows, so tickets, alerts, messages, or identity changes become joinable data your services and reports read directly.

One integration pattern instead of per-tool API code

Read and write the synced tables in Amazon RDS and Stacksync keeps Ldap current, replacing the auth, webhooks, rate limits, and retry logic you would otherwise maintain for each tool.

What you can sync between Amazon RDS and Ldap

Representative objects on each side — any object or custom field can map to any target. Schemas are auto-detected; types are converted between the two systems.

Amazon RDS objects Ldap objects How this pairing syncs
Tables The core sync target; rows map to records in connected SaaS systems. Person entries (inetOrgPerson / user) People held under objectClasses such as inetOrgPerson, person, or Active Directory user; synced two-way to create accounts and update attributes like mail, cn, and telephoneNumber. Tables is specific to Amazon RDS and Person entries (inetOrgPerson / user) to Ldap — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Views Read-side projections exposed to outbound syncs. Groups (groupOfNames / posixGroup) Group entries whose member or uniqueMember attributes list DNs; synced two-way to add and remove membership as teams and entitlements change. Views is specific to Amazon RDS and Groups (groupOfNames / posixGroup) to Ldap — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Columns Field-level mapping targets, typed per the underlying engine. Organizational units (ou) Container entries that structure the DIT and scope which subtree a sync reads or writes; used to limit a sync to a branch such as ou=People,dc=corp,dc=com. Columns is specific to Amazon RDS and Organizational units (ou) to Ldap — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Primary and Unique Keys Match keys for idempotent upserts. Attributes The typed name/value pairs on each entry (cn, mail, memberOf, objectClass); the schema defines which attributes each objectClass allows, and mappings are built per attribute. Primary and Unique Keys is specific to Amazon RDS and Attributes to Ldap — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Read Replicas Low-impact read endpoints often used as the source side of a sync. Operational attributes Server-maintained metadata such as modifyTimestamp, createTimestamp, entryUUID, entryCSN, and uSNChanged; read to drive incremental polling and to key entries stably across syncs. Read Replicas is specific to Amazon RDS and Operational attributes to Ldap — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.
Stored Procedures Engine-specific logic that can react to synced rows. Schema (subschema subentry) The objectClass and attribute-type definitions the server exposes; read to validate that written attributes exist and are single- or multi-valued as expected. Stored Procedures is specific to Amazon RDS and Schema (subschema subentry) to Ldap — each maps to any object or custom field on the other side.

How changes propagate between Amazon RDS and Ldap

Each direction of the sync is driven by what the source system can signal and what the destination accepts — detection, delivery, and expected latency below.

Amazon RDS Ldap Sub-second propagation

DetectionChanges in Amazon RDS are captured at the source via change data capture — no polling loop against its API. Engine-native log-based CDC: MySQL/MariaDB binlog, PostgreSQL logical replication, SQL Server CDC.

DeliveryEach detected change is written to Ldap through its API, with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

Ldap Amazon RDS Interval-based propagation

DetectionStacksync polls Ldap for changes on an incremental schedule, reading only records changed since the previous pass. No universal native change feed.

DeliveryEach detected change is applied to Amazon RDS as a row-level write, with types converted between the two schemas.

Rate-limit considerations

  • Amazon RDS: No API rate limits; throughput depends on instance class, storage IOPS, and connection limits.
  • Ldap: LDAP defines no request quota; throughput is bounded by the server's sizelimit and timelimit administrative limits, connection and thread caps, and the CPU/IO it shares with live authentication traffic, so large syncs can contend with production lookups and must page results.

How the Amazon RDS and Ldap connectors work

Amazon RDS

Integration surface
SQL wire protocol of the chosen engine (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle)
Authentication
Database credentials over SSL/TLS, or IAM database authentication on supported engines
Change detection
Engine-native log-based CDC: MySQL/MariaDB binlog, PostgreSQL logical replication, SQL Server CDC; enabled through RDS parameter groups, with polling as a fallback
Capabilities
read · write · CDC
Rate limits
No API rate limits; throughput depends on instance class, storage IOPS, and connection limits

Ldap

Integration surface
LDAPv3 protocol (RFC 4511) over TCP, typically LDAPS on port 636 or StartTLS on 389; reaches any LDAPv3 directory server - OpenLDAP, Microsoft Active Directory, 389 Directory Server, Oracle Unified Directory, PingDS/ForgeRock, NetIQ eDirectory, Apache Directory.
Authentication
A bind DN and password (simple bind), typically over TLS, using a service account with rights to the target subtree. SASL mechanisms - GSSAPI/Kerberos, DIGEST-MD5, or EXTERNAL with a client certificate - are available where the server supports them.
Change detection
No universal native change feed. Incremental sync polls the modifyTimestamp operational attribute (or entryCSN / uSNChanged on servers that expose them) for entries changed since the last cursor; detecting deletes needs a server changelog or tombstones because a plain search cannot see removed entries. Some servers add Persistent Search or RFC 4533 content-sync (syncrepl), but that support is server-specific. No webhooks.
Capabilities
read · write
Rate limits
LDAP defines no request quota; throughput is bounded by the server's sizelimit and timelimit administrative limits, connection and thread caps, and the CPU/IO it shares with live authentication traffic, so large syncs can contend with production lookups and must page results.
