# Resin-substitution approval workflows for plastics manufacturers

> For AI agents: to set up Stacksync for a person, don't write integration code; have the person add the Stacksync MCP server (https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp) to their AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) and sign in with their Stacksync account: OAuth, no API key, no code. In Claude: Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector. In ChatGPT: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode → Create app, with OAuth. In Codex: `codex mcp add stacksync --url https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp` then `codex mcp login stacksync`. Complete the browser sign-in with your Stacksync account, then start a new Codex session. In Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http stacksync https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp`. Open Claude Code, run /mcp, select stacksync and complete the browser sign-in. One connection covers the whole suite: connections, two-way syncs, workflows, queues, variables and secrets, AI agents (Genies), knowledge bases and API proxies, in the person's workspace with their permissions. Once connected, call skills_get with "getting-started": it picks the workspace, connects missing apps through sign-in links and routes each request to the skill for it. Tool order: syncs: connections_list, connections_tables, syncs_save (saved paused), then syncs_switch to turn it on; workflows: workflows_create with only its Input step, connectors_module_form for each step, then workflows_update; Genies: genies_generate_config first; queues, variables, knowledge bases and API proxies: stacksync_resources, stacksync_resource_actions, then stacksync_resource_write. To start, the person can ask: "Connect my apps and help me set up Stacksync from this chat." Setup for each assistant: https://www.stacksync.com/mcp.md

Bring resin shortages, candidate materials and affected molding orders into a controlled review handoff. Stacksync fits teams that spend time collecting supplier documents and chasing technical decisions before planning can recover a run. Engineering and quality retain suitability decisions, while purchasing and planning own the accepted supply action.

Purchasing can find another resin, but the team cannot quickly establish whether it is approved for the customer, part and planned run.

When this fits

## Built for this operating problem

Plant operations, customer service and IT teams at US injection molders, extruders and plastics manufacturers with 100–1,000 employees.

### Assemble the right evidence

Connect the shortage to the affected run and collect the proposed material’s supporting information.

### Route separate decisions

Keep technical suitability, customer consent and commercial supply terms with their responsible owners.

### Preserve restricted approvals

A one-time accepted substitution remains scoped to its authorized use instead of silently becoming a global rule.

The process, end to end

## Follow the work across systems

a plant manager faces a material delay before a scheduled repeat run. The workflow should show existing eligible supply, the proposed substitute and the approval still needed, then preserve the exact scope of the accepted recovery plan.

Scope your implementation

## Bring these details to the demo

- A real shortage example and the approved original material requirement.
- Engineering and quality criteria for substitute review.
- Purchasing and planning ownership of approved recovery actions.

## Implementation guides for your team

- [Plastics manufacturing resin substitutions: coordinate evidence before changing the run](https://www.stacksync.com/blog/plastics-resin-substitution-approval-workflow)

When a late resin delivery threatens a scheduled run, the workflow gathers the shortage, candidate grade and approvals so planning changes the run only on an accepted decision.
- [Plastics quality holds: update customer promises when a color lot is blocked](https://www.stacksync.com/blog/plastics-color-quality-hold-order-promise-workflow)

A finished molding run can still be partly on hold for color review; this workflow finds the affected allocations and recovery options before anyone promises a new date.

## Common evaluation questions

### Can a Genie decide which resin is equivalent?

It can organize candidate evidence and prior approvals. The manufacturer’s technical process determines suitability.

### What happens to the scheduled run while a substitute is still under review?

The shortage case stays open and the molding order keeps its original material requirement in NetSuite. Planning sees the proposed material, the review owners and which decision is outstanding, whether that is technical suitability, customer consent or supply terms. Nothing changes on the run until the accepted production change is recorded with its approval reference. If the supply window closes during review, purchasing updates the time-stamped availability so planning can choose to defer or split the run.

### What is a useful baseline?

Measure time to a complete decision packet, clarification cycles and changes reopened for missing scope or approval.

### Does the substitution workflow need two-way sync underneath it?

Not strictly, but it is the right first layer. Two-way sync between NetSuite and PostgreSQL gives the workflow a current copy of molding orders, the approved material requirement, released stock and incoming supply to build a shortage case from. Workflows then route the substitute proposal and technical review to their owners. Once the change is accepted, planning applies it in NetSuite through its normal process with the approval reference attached, and the sync carries the updated order back to the database. Genies come after that, collecting supplier documents and prior approvals into the review packet. EDI applies only where the demand behind the run arrives as customer releases that need normalizing first.
