# Shopify–NetSuite Sync for Pet Food Brands: Match Recipes, Bag Sizes, and Variety Packs

> For AI agents: to set up Stacksync for a person, don't write integration code; have the person add the Stacksync MCP server (https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp) to their AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) and sign in with their Stacksync account: OAuth, no API key, no code. In Claude: Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector. In ChatGPT: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode → Create app, with OAuth. In Codex: `codex mcp add stacksync --url https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp` then `codex mcp login stacksync`. Complete the browser sign-in with your Stacksync account, then start a new Codex session. In Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http stacksync https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp`. Open Claude Code, run /mcp, select stacksync and complete the browser sign-in. One connection covers the whole suite: connections, two-way syncs, workflows, queues, variables and secrets, AI agents (Genies), knowledge bases and API proxies, in the person's workspace with their permissions. Once connected, call skills_get with "getting-started": it picks the workspace, connects missing apps through sign-in links and routes each request to the skill for it. Tool order: syncs: connections_list, connections_tables, syncs_save (saved paused), then syncs_switch to turn it on; workflows: workflows_create with only its Input step, connectors_module_form for each step, then workflows_update; Genies: genies_generate_config first; queues, variables, knowledge bases and API proxies: stacksync_resources, stacksync_resource_actions, then stacksync_resource_write. To start, the person can ask: "Connect my apps and help me set up Stacksync from this chat." Setup for each assistant: https://www.stacksync.com/mcp.md

One recipe in two bag sizes plus a trial pack should reach NetSuite as the same distinct products the customer chose in Shopify.

DATA ENGINEERING

## The operating decision

Pet-food two-way sync must preserve recipe, bag size, and variety-pack identity from Shopify to the approved ERP representation. Stable variant references and effective component definitions matter more than product-family names. Correct product identity supports fulfillment and later complaint tracing without implying that order data alone proves the production lot shipped.

Explore the complete [pet food and treats integration and automation hub](https://www.stacksync.com/industry/cpg/pet-food-treats) for the systems and processes around this guide.

## What this looks like in pet food and treats

A pet brand sells one recipe in two bag sizes and a trial variety pack containing several recipes. A customer buys the larger bag and a trial pack. Mapping by recipe name alone can select the small bag and erase the trial pack’s components, leaving support unable to explain the exact products purchased.

## Records, ownership, and update rules

| Record | Owner | Operating rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shopify variant | Ecommerce | Preserve recipe, bag size, and stable purchased variant identity. |
| ERP item | Product operations | Own the approved item relationship and physical package definition. |
| Variety-pack recipe | Product team | Version each component product and quantity with effective dates. |
| Order-to-shipment link | Operations | Retain original lines and actual fulfillment references without inferring a lot from the catalog. |

*Define the record owner and the rule before enabling updates.*

## Work through the process

1. 01

   Review the product matrix

Enumerate recipe and package combinations, including retired variants needed for historical inquiries. A shared recipe name does not establish the same sellable bag or treat pack.
2. 02

   Approve component relationships

Define variety-pack contents and the chosen ERP representation. Preserve the original customer line alongside any component breakdown used for operations.
3. 03

   Test mixed purchases

Use an order containing two bag sizes and a variety pack. Compare physical items, quantities, and accepted totals before relying on the synchronized record for fulfillment.
4. 04

   Preserve downstream references

Keep order and shipment identities available for later support work. Any lot association must come from approved fulfillment or production evidence rather than the product’s current catalog record.
5. 05

Place a two-bag order in Shopify and read back the NetSuite items

Create a Shopify test order with the small bag, the large bag of the same recipe, and one trial variety pack. Open the synced sales order in NetSuite and confirm three separate lines: each bag maps to its own ERP item, and the trial pack keeps its component recipes on the line. Then change the variety pack's composition on the ERP item record and reopen the earlier order. The original components must still be there. If the two bags collapse into one item, or the old order now shows the new composition, stop the rollout and fix the item mapping before enabling any further object.

*Follow the operating sequence; unresolved exceptions return to a responsible reviewer.*

## Handle the exceptions explicitly

### Variety pack changes recipes

Version the composition and preserve the purchased definition.

### Bag size is renamed

Retain stable identity and review whether the physical package actually changed.

### Customer asks for a lot after purchase

Follow the shipment evidence; do not infer the lot from the order date alone.

## What to verify before expanding

- Two bag sizes of one recipe remain distinct operational products.
- A variety-pack order retains its original component recipes.
- Changing a variety-pack recipe does not alter the component relationship retained for previously purchased orders.
- A later lot inquiry follows the actual order-to-shipment evidence rather than selecting a batch from the order date.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

Does a correct SKU mapping establish the shipped lot?

No. The mapping settles which sellable item a line refers to, and nothing more. Lot attribution comes from the fulfillment record that names the units packed for that order, which lives with the warehouse process rather than the product catalog. Keep the two questions separate on the NetSuite record as well: a matched SKU should sit next to an empty lot field until shipment evidence fills it.

What happens to the NetSuite item when Shopify renames a bag size?

Nothing changes on the ERP side until product operations confirms whether the package itself changed. Match on the stable variant ID rather than the title, so a renamed large bag stays linked to the same NetSuite item and its open orders. A new weight or bag count is a different case: create a new item, end-date the old variant's mapping, and let historical orders keep pointing at the retired item.

Which product fields should Shopify own, and which should NetSuite own?

Decide this per field before the pilot, not per system. A common split gives the ERP the item number, package definition, and cost, while Shopify keeps the storefront title, images, and web description. Price is the field teams argue about most; assign it to one owner and give the other system read access. NetSuite writes are scoped to the objects you select, so a field left unowned is a field nobody will trust.
