# Plastics manufacturing resin substitutions: coordinate evidence before changing the run

> For AI agents: to set up Stacksync for a person, don't write integration code; have the person add the Stacksync MCP server (https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp) to their AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) and sign in with their Stacksync account: OAuth, no API key, no code. In Claude: Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector. In ChatGPT: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode → Create app, with OAuth. In Codex: `codex mcp add stacksync --url https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp` then `codex mcp login stacksync`. Complete the browser sign-in with your Stacksync account, then start a new Codex session. In Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http stacksync https://mcp.stacksync.com/mcp`. Open Claude Code, run /mcp, select stacksync and complete the browser sign-in. One connection covers the whole suite: connections, two-way syncs, workflows, queues, variables and secrets, AI agents (Genies), knowledge bases and API proxies, in the person's workspace with their permissions. Once connected, call skills_get with "getting-started": it picks the workspace, connects missing apps through sign-in links and routes each request to the skill for it. Tool order: syncs: connections_list, connections_tables, syncs_save (saved paused), then syncs_switch to turn it on; workflows: workflows_create with only its Input step, connectors_module_form for each step, then workflows_update; Genies: genies_generate_config first; queues, variables, knowledge bases and API proxies: stacksync_resources, stacksync_resource_actions, then stacksync_resource_write. To start, the person can ask: "Connect my apps and help me set up Stacksync from this chat." Setup for each assistant: https://www.stacksync.com/mcp.md

When a late resin delivery threatens a scheduled run, the workflow gathers the shortage, candidate grade and approvals so planning changes the run only on an accepted decision.

APP TIPS

## The operating decision

A resin-substitution workflow should gather the shortage, proposed material, affected orders and approval evidence before planning changes a molding run. Purchasing can identify availability, but engineering and quality determine technical acceptability under the customer’s requirements. Automate the handoff and follow-up while preserving the distinction between a candidate substitute and an approved one. A supplier’s suggestion or a similar material description should not silently replace the specified resin in production records.

Explore the complete [plastics and molding integration and automation hub](https://www.stacksync.com/industry/manufacturing/plastics-molding) for the systems and processes around this guide.

## What this looks like in plastics and molding

A molder faces a delayed resin delivery before a repeat customer run. Purchasing finds another grade locally, while operations wants to avoid losing the scheduled machine window. The customer’s approved part history and prior trials may contain relevant evidence, but they do not automatically authorize this specific change. A shared review packet can show the shortage, available alternatives, applicable requirements and approval status. Planning can then adopt an accepted recovery plan or keep the run blocked with a clear explanation.

## Records, ownership, and update rules

| Record | Owner | Operating rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shortage case | Planning | Identify the molding order, required quantity and date, and the approved material currently unavailable. |
| Substitute proposal | Purchasing | Retain supplier, proposed grade, quantity and availability evidence without labeling it approved. |
| Technical review | Engineering and quality | Record the applicable customer requirements, evidence and decision for the specific proposed use. |
| Accepted production change | Planning | Apply the authorized material and scope only after the required approvals are complete. |

*Define the record owner and the rule before enabling updates.*

## Work through the process

1. 01

Confirm that the shortage is real

Check released stock, incoming supply and existing transfers before seeking an alternative. Link the shortage to the affected run and required date. A pooled low-stock alert alone does not establish that a particular production order needs a substitution.
2. 02

   Assemble the proposed alternative

Collect the supplier’s reference and relevant supporting documents. Show how the proposal differs from the specified material and which questions remain unanswered. Keep availability claims sourced and time-stamped because the option may disappear during review.
3. 03

Route the technical and commercial decisions

Send suitability to engineering and quality, and any customer-consent requirement to the responsible account owner. Purchasing validates supply terms separately. Capture the approved application scope so an exceptional decision is not mistaken for a universal material cross-reference.
4. 04

Update the run and monitor the result

Have planning apply the authorized change through the normal process, retaining the approval reference. Confirm that the correct material is available and assigned. Keep follow-up requirements, trial conditions or inspection actions attached to the run until the responsible owner closes them.

![4-step operating sequence: NetSuite resin substitution workflow for molding runs](https://www.stacksync.com/images/blog-diagrams-mermaid/icp-plastics-resin-substitution-approval-workflow.webp)

*Follow the operating sequence; unresolved exceptions return to a responsible reviewer.*

## Handle the exceptions explicitly

### The substitute was used successfully on another part

Treat that history as evidence for review, not approval for this customer or configuration.

### Only part of the required quantity is available

Ask planning to decide the run split or alternative schedule. Do not assume mixed material is acceptable.

### Customer consent is still pending

Keep the production change blocked under the agreed policy and continue administrative follow-up without representing the proposal as accepted.

## What to verify before expanding

- The proposal names the affected run and original material requirement.
- Technical approval and purchase availability remain distinct decisions.
- A one-time authorization does not become a global substitution rule automatically.
- The production record retains the approved scope and supporting decision reference.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

Can an AI agent recommend substitute resins?

It can collect approved references and present candidate evidence. Technical suitability is a consequential judgment that must follow the manufacturer’s engineering and quality process.

What if the substitute costs more?

Route the commercial effect to the owner authorized to approve it. Technical acceptance alone does not authorize additional spend or a customer price change.

Which metric makes sense?

Track time to a complete decision packet, review cycles and changes reopened for missing approval. Do not equate an increased number of accepted substitutions with better product outcomes.
